Bottle Notes - 2021 Wildrose Rot from Weingut Rosner
I’m reality excited to share my newest bottle notes post here in the Weinstube!
Today, I'm featuring the 2021 vintage Wildrose Rot from Weingut Rosner, who I previously highlighted, in Austria's Kamptal region.
The wine is unfined, unfiltered, with minimal sulfur. The name Wildrose designed as an analogy to the rose hip (or wild rose) that grows at the edge of vineyards.
The wine is 100% Zweigelt and whole-bunch fermented before being aged in used oak. The grapes come from the Steinberg mountain north of Langenlois.
What a wonderful wine.
This wine is so distinct and one that deserves to truly be savored and considered over hours.
Every wine and style has its place. Some wines are meant to be young and fresh. Some wines are meant to be aged for years. Some wines are brighter and more refreshing. Some wines are bolder and richer. Some wines are perfect as an apéritif. Some wines are perfect pairings with a large meal.
This wine seems to fit into each of these categories though, representing the perfect "all-arounder."
Deep purple in appearance, on the nose there are notes of blackberry jam, blueberry pancakes, black tea, and violets. On the palate, I get additional notes of ripe black cherry, liquorice root, and vanilla bean.
These are some of the most unique and interesting notes I've ever written on a wine I sampled and that makes me incredibly happy. The wine is concentrated without feeling heavy or overextracted. Full in body, there is shining acidity and grippy tannins.
This wine can certainly be enjoyed young and on its own or at a Summer picnic with friends or family, but it also has the potential to age, to be eaten alongside a meal, or considered deeply on its own. This could pair well with so many dishes, but I would suggest alongside a steak and sautéed mushrooms, a wild game stew, or a wild mushroom ragù.
This 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, but could age well until 2033.
I also appreciate how this wine is made from 100% Zweigelt, a grape varietal indigenous to Austria. This wine, for me, is truly a representation of what Austria is and the love that Austrians have for their land and the products they produce here.
I could say a million things about this wine, but I'll keep it short and say three things. This wine feel pure, this wine makes me happy, if you see this wine, buy it.
