Bottle Notes - 2023 Verdejo Ecológico Sobre Lías from Viña Dammis in D.O. Rueda of Spain
Recently I have been able to happily present some great winemakers and wineries here in Austria, but sometimes I find it important to look abroad.
One of my favorite producers out there is Viña Dammis in D.O. Rueda of Spain.
The winery is relatively new, producing only two, but very distinct, wines.
Here, I want to highlight the 2023 Verdejo Ecológico Sobre Lías wine they are making.
The wine is made of 100% Verdejo grapes, indigenous to the Rueda region, and spends 5 months on the fine lees, or own yeast cells to add body and texture, which is meant to give additional character and richness to the wine.
This is a fresh and delicious white wine which is excites the senses.
Soft gold in appearance, the wine offers notes of lemon peel, grapefruit, passionfruit, and sweet basil on the nose.
On the palate, the wine is bright and precise, with additional notes of crisp green apple, freshly-squeezed lime, and flaky sea salt. Light in body with shining acidity, this wine is crisp, while displaying dimensions of fresh exotic fruit alongside herbal and lightly salty undertones.
This can be enjoyed as an aperitif on a warm, sunny day or ideally alongside seafood like seared scallops, stewed mussels, or shrimp in a light garlic sauce, fresh bread and young white cheeses, or a Spanish Omelette!
This 2023 vintage is drinking perfectly now and drink this wine 1-5 years from vintage to appreciate the freshness of the wine and purity of the fruit.
