Bottle Notes - 2024 "Carte Noir" Picpoul de Pinet from Cave de l'Ormarine
In my continuation of highlighting my favorite cooperative wineries, I am excited to share my first round of bottle notes on the 2024 "Carte Noir" Picpoul de Pinet from Cave de l'Ormarine!
Located in the heart of Languedoc, Cave de l'Ormarine is recognized as a leading producer of Picpoul de Pinet, a wine that reflects the vibrant character of southern France’s Mediterranean coastline.
Founded in 1922 as a collective of local winegrowers, the estate now unites five separate cooperatives, each adding their own distinctive terroir to the final wine.
The vineyards, set atop chalky clay plateaus abundant in limestone and quartz, are cooled by breezes from the nearby Etang de Thau and the Mediterranean Sea, preserving the grape’s renowned freshness and lively acidity.
Picpoul de Pinet is a renowned white wine appellation (AOC) from the Languedoc region in southern France, specializing in wines made exclusively from the Picpoul (alo spelled as “Piquepoul”) grape varietal.
The vineyards are located along the Mediterranean coast near the Bassin de Thau, a large lagoon famous for its seafood, especially oysters, which pairs exceptionally well with this wine.
Now, to the wine!
This is a light and refreshing wine, perfect for warm Spring and Summer days.
Pale straw in appearance, this wine is filled with notes of ripe grapefruit, lime peel, and green tea on the nose, with additional notes of crunchy green apple, freshly-squeezed lemon juice and sweet basil on the palate.
Light in body with shining acidity, the wine has great length and a delightful crispness on the palate. This is a fun wine, which would be a great crowd-pleaser at any family gathering or party.
I always believe each wine has its occasion, and this is the ideal wine to share with others on a warm and sunny day, whether you're having a picnic or a day at the beach.
There's something here for both wine enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts who enjoy a glass occassionaly alike!
This is light and crisp enough to be drank as an apéritif, but is also the perfect pairing for lighter seafood fare like oysters, bouillabaisse, or mussels with garlic and parsely or other lighter savory dishes like pho, ramen, miso soup, and tamago sushi.
Drink this wine young to appreciate its fresh and expressive character!
