Bottle Notes - 2024 Vintage Steiermark DAC Schilcher Junker from Erzherzog Johann Weine
For part-two of my discussion on Steierischer Junker, I wanted to discuss a different style, namely the Schilcher Junker from Erzherzog Johann Weine.
Erzherzog Johann Weine is the only winegrowers' association in the Steiermark region and cover vineyards in all 3 wine-growing regions within the Steiermark (Vulkanland Steiermark DAC, Südsteiermark DAC and Weststeiermark DAC). In total, there are 200 producers working with Erzherzog Johann to produce a diverse range of wines which highlight the region.
Founded in 1916, the association has its roots in the ancient wine cellar of Ehrenhausen Castle, which was originally owned by the Ritcher family. Collectively, these winegrowers cultivate approximately 180-200 hectares of vineyards, making Erzherzog Johann Weine one of the significant wine producers in the region.
Schilcher Junker is a category of young wines from the Steiermark region produced a rosé wine made primarily from the Blauer Wildbacher grape varietal. These wines become available for sale starting October 25th each year, and are typically refreshing and lively with youthful, fruity aromas. Schilcher Junker is often enjoyed as an aperitif and is made to be consumed young until the following summer.
This wine is produced exclusively from the Blauer Wildbacher grape varietal. There are only 520 hectares of the grape under vine in Austria and it is native to the Weststeiermark region. Blauer Wildbacher is a very late ripening grape, producing fruit-forward, balanced wines with restrained tannins. Only Blauer Wildbacher from Steiermark is permitted for the production of Schilcher rosé wines like this.
Now, to the wine itself!
Deep pink in appearance, this wine immediately presents fresh red fruit notes of ripe strawberry and fresh cherry with floral cherry blossom on the nose.
Shining acidity on the palate is accompanied by additional notes of rhubarb jam, red currant, and pink sea salt. Light bodied and refreshing, this is a refreshing appetizer wine to share casually with friends and family on a warm day in the sun.
Drink this immediately and pair with fresh cuts of thinly sliced ham or salami and bread slices with an assortment of fresh jams and spreads like liptauer aufstrich, pâté, and streichwurst!
