Winery Highlight - Weingut Wiederstein in Göttlesbrunn, Austria
Being based in Austria, I always love highlighting the best family-run wineries here.
I first got to know wines made by Weingut Wiederstein in the United States. When I lived in Washington, D.C., wines from the Wiederstein winery were importers by Peter Weygandt and one of my favorite former wine shops in the city. I immediately fell in love with her wines, and they were also a crowd favorite when I attended tastings. Even among the Weygandt staff, everyone would swoon about how great Birgit Wiederstein was such a friendly and warm person.
As I moved to Austria, getting to know the winery and the wines better made me even more excited!
Birgit Wiederstein is an Austrian winemaker based in the town of Göttlesbrunn in the state of Lower Austria. She is the main person responsible for the wines at her 6 hectares, or about 25 acres, of vineyards, where the philosophy emphasizes the connection between soil, climate, vine, and wine.
The history of the winery goes back to 1876, and Birgit herself produced her first wine in 1998, carrying out her education at the Weinbauschule Klosterneuburg before beginning her full-time management of the Wiederstein winery in 2002.
She sees herself as a "wine-making companion" whose task is to recognize and promote these relationships. Her approach results in wines that are described as feminine, elegant, and subtle, with depth and character.
The winery produces a range of wines, with red varietals comprising approximately 60% of the vines, made up of Zweigelt, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Blaufränkisch. White varietals make up the remaining 40%, including varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Gelber Muskateller, Lindenblättriger, Brauner Veltliner.
As Birgit herself writes, „Wein ist für mich ein Traum und ein Abenteuer, die ich jedes Jahr aufs Neue erleben und begleiten darf,“ which means that for her, wine is both a dream and an adventure in which each year she experiences and accompanies the grape harvest and winemaking process.
She particularly enjoys searching for the character of the wines and understanding them through tasting. Her winemaking style is influenced by the historic soil of Carnuntum, a former Roman province southeast of Vienna surrounding the town of Göttlesbrunn.
Her approach to winemaking demonstrates that terroir encompasses more than just the right vines on great soil in a suitable climate.
I will be highlighting a selection of her wines here, which are both distinct in their production and beautiful in their presentation.
Therefore, stay tuned!
